PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus that reduces a footprint of carriage movement and achieves space-saving, and miniaturizes the device for compactification. SOLUTION: A first unit which moves a reading carriage forward and backward in a predetermined image reading area, and a second unit which mounts a light source lamp and a reflecting mirror, are separated and composed. The first unit turnably supports the second unit in an axis to reverse the main scanning direction attitude. A carriage driving means which moves the first unit forward and backward, controls to perform image reading of the image reading area divided into 2 sections, and the main scanning direction attitude of the second unit is reversed in the image reading of the succeeding image reading area.
