PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a renewal method of an elevator for shortening a complete stopping period, by using an existing hydraulic elevator up to time just before changing to a rope time elevator, by dividing a work process stepwise for renewing the hydraulic elevator to the rope type elevator. SOLUTION: This method is provided for renewing the hydraulic elevator to the rope type elevator of using a hoisting machine 4, and successively performs a first stage of performing installation and replacement of equipment used after renewal to a position of not hindering operation of the hydraulic elevator while maintaining use as the hydraulic elevator for liftably driving a car 1 by a hydraulic jack 2, a second stage of performing installation work to a top part or a bottom part in a hoistway 3 of a hoisting machine 4 while maintaining the use as the hydraulic elevator in a state of restricting the movement to the uppermost story or the lowest story of the car 1, and a third stage of performing switching work to the rope type elevator by stopping the use as the hydraulic elevator.
