PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal alignment layer which sufficiently satisfies properties such as vertical alignment property required in practical use as a liquid crystal display element, voltage holding ratio or weatherability, and is easily peeled in rework when a defect is generated; to provide a liquid crystal-aligning agent which is suitable as a forming material of the liquid crystal alignment layer and excellent in printing properties; and to provide a liquid crystal display element having the liquid crystal alignment layer, a compound, and a method for producing the compound. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal aligning agent comprises [A] at least one polymer selected from the group comprising polyamic acids and polyimides and [B] a compound represented by formula (1).
