A receiver comprises a variable gain unit, which is capable of changing gain between a first gain and a second gain that is smaller than the aforementioned first gain, and which amplifies an incoming signal by the aforementioned gain to yield an amplified signal, a comparator, which compares the power of the aforementioned amplified signal with a reference level and produces a comparison result, and a controller, which sets the aforementioned gain to a third gain between the aforementioned first gain and second gain when the aforementioned incoming signal is received with power greater than the aforementioned reference level when in standby mode. The aforementioned controller sets the aforementioned gain to the first gain if the power drops below the reference level after the aforementioned third gain has been set. The aforementioned controller starts the aforementioned standby mode when the power drops below the aforementioned reference level after the first gain has been set, and sets the aforementioned gain to a fourth gain, which is between the aforementioned first gain and third gain and which enables reception of the aforementioned incoming signal when the power is greater than the aforementioned reference level.
