Disclosed is a polyester for a toner obtained by the condensation polymerization reaction of an aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid compound in which the sum of the number of hydroxy groups and the number of carboxyl groups is 4 or more, an alcohol component containing 50 mol% or more of an aliphatic diol having a hydroxy group attached to a secondary carbon atom, and a carboxylic acid component (excluding the aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid compound), wherein the molar ratio of the aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid compound to the aliphatic diol having a hydroxy group attached to a secondary carbon atom (the aliphatic hydroxycarboxylic acid compound / the aliphatic diol having a hydroxy group attached to a secondary carbon atom) is from 0.05 to 0.8. Further disclosed are a binder resin for a toner containing the polyester and an electrophotographic toner containing the binder resin. The polyester for a toner is preferably used, for example, as a binder resin for a toner to be used for developing a latent image formed by electrophotography, electrostatic recording, electrostatic printing, or the like.
