<p>Novel olivine phase compounds for use as cathode material for sodium-ion batteries, having a high energy density and corresponding high rate performance, and a process for their synthesis by a low temperature solid state method are described herein. In particular, olivine phase compounds having the general formula Na[MnI-xMx]PO4, where M is selected from the group consisting of Fe, Ca and Mg and where preferably 0 = x = 0.5, and NaxFePO4, where O = x =1, are synthesized by a simple solid state reaction at low temperature. These compounds exhibit preferential properties for use as cathode materials in sodium-ion batteries, including reversible electrochemical de/intercalation.</p> |
