A pre-stressed rolling mill comprises working rolls 8, Fig. 1, mounted in chocks 14, backing rolls 12, screw jacks 16 for spacing apart the chocks, hydraulic plungers 24 for holding the work rolls in engagement with the backing rolls, and screw-down spindles or wedges 32. Load-meters 22, Fig. 1, are inserted between pressure pads 20 and the lower chocks 14 and the latter are urged upwardly by hydraulic pistons 30. During adjustment of the pass, spindles 32 are rotated to displace the upper chocks 14, by a worm and wheel drive 38, 40, and the jacks 16 are displaced the same amount but in the opposite direction by gears 42 and 50 so that the pressure on pad 20 remains unchanged. In a modification, Figs. 2, 3, screw-down spindles 132 are rotationally fixed and nuts 134 are rotated to cause the spindles to move up or down by a worm drive 140, one of the jacks 116 is rotated from a shaft 64 through gears 66, 67, and a worm and wheel drive 70, 72. The drive to the other jack is by bevel gears 74, wormshaft 75, bevel gears 76, and a worm and wheel 80, 82. When wedges are being used, the drive normally used for driving spindles 32, 132 is applied to the screws which actuate the wedges. |
