PURPOSE: A device and a method for processing an image in an image display device are provided to output an image at optimum resolution by distinguishing resolution by analyzing a synchronizing signal of an image signal. CONSTITUTION: A scaler(106) checks a width of a horizontality sync signal or a verticality sync signal if an input signal is sensed. A storage unit stores a sync signal width checking in the scaler and data of a horizontal/vertical line number and a horizontal/vertical frequency. A micom determines resolution of an inputted signal according to data value stored in the storing unit. A control unit checks one data among a horizontal/vertical frequency of an input signal, a horizontal/vertical line number.
