A parking metering system is disclosed, which includes a communication network 101, at least one location 102 with metered use connected to the network and an electronic transaction processing system 106 connected to the network. The location 102, such as a car park, has a respective location identifier 103. The metering system further includes apparatus for connecting at least one vehicle 104 having a respective vehicle identifier 105 to the communication network, such as a mobile telephone, and associating the respective location identifier 103 and the respective vehicle identifier 105 with an electronic transaction processed by the electronic transaction processing system. The metering system further includes a database for storing the respective location identifier 103 and the respective vehicle identifier 105 in a data structure connected to the communication network and accessible at the at least one location 102. Enforcement personnel can access the data structure to determine whether vehicles 104 are legitimately parked. The location identifier 103 may be an alphanumeric code, a barcode or smart code, or an RFID tag. The vehicle identifier 105 may be the number plate or license plate code. The transaction may be processed using an automated voice call system or a SMS system. |
