A user interface apparatus comprises a graphical user interface and a processing resource. The processing resource is arranged to control, when in use, the graphical user interface for navigating through a data structure associated with data stored in a database, the data structure having a topology. The GUI is presented as a one or more three-dimensional objects (908, 912, 922, 934, 936, 938, 940). The three-dimensional objects (908, 912, 922, 934, 936, 938, 940) are selectable in order to enable visual navigation through the topology of the data structure. A second three-dimensional (928) object may only be displayed in response to a selection from the first object (918). A third object may be displayed in response to a selection from the second object. The first objects may be displayed as a non geometric shape or as a representation of a machine. The second object may subtend from the first and be a polyhedron rotatable about an axis. The objects may be manipulated by a motion sensitive controller capable of detecting a movement gesture of the user.
