The lathe disclosed in Specification 1,195,371 includes an additional indexable tool magazine 301, Fig. 1, for transferring tools between the magazines 301 and 48. An additional tool transfer mechanism 308, and reading heads 340 for magazine 301 are provided. In operation, magazine 301 is indexed in regular steps so that as each tool is brought to the tool change position the associated key 114 actuates reading head 339, the coding read off being stored. Magazine 48 is rotated until reading head 340 senses the corresponding coding on one of the keys 114, whereupon the magazines are stopped, and the tools are interchanged by tool transfer mechanism 308. |
