1,196,084. Evaporators, multi-stage flash type; desalination of water. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D. ETUDES CEGELERG. 15 March. 1968 [17 March, .1967], No.12745/68. Heading B1B. Sea. water (or other salt solution) is desalinated by introducing the .preheated sea water into the top of a column divided into superposed cells by partitions 4 each having a well 5 provided with orifices 8 through which the sea water enters the cell as a spray and undergoes partial evaporation because the pressure diminishes from cell to cell in the downward direction. The column is provided with double walls with a cavity 3 between them, and the vapour condenses on the inner wall by heatexchange with sea water flowing up the cavity 3. The condensate (desalinated water) collects in troughs 9, and flows down through orifices 14, tubes 15 and orifices 13. Entrained droplets of salt water are removed from ,the vapours by louvres 7. The rate of flow of sea water through orifices 8 is controlled by a float 30 connected to a ball 32 which partially closes the crosssectional outlet area of the well 5. Provision is made for the deigasification, of the sea water before and during flash evaporation. Several columns may be juxtaposed to form a large desalination unit. Partitions 4 may be made of rubberised material.
