A bubble humidifier (2) includes a base (6) for containing liquid (22) and a cover (4). The humidifier (2) has an oxygen inlet (8) and a moisturized oxygen outlet (10) for supplying the moisturized oxygen to a patient. The inlet (8) is connected to a diffuser (18) for bubbling the oxygen into the liquid (22). The humidifier (2) has a pressure relief valve (12) for relieving excess pressure generated during operation of the device (2). The diffuser (18) is constructed such that gas is delivered into the liquid (22) at an angle substantially normal to a longitudinal axis of the humidifier (2).
