Synthesis of 1-acyl-3-carbalkoxy and 1,3 - dicarbalkoxymexa-1,5 dienes

Novel compounds of the formula: R1R2=CR3-CH2CH(COOR5)CR4=CHCOR6 (where R1, R2 = aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon groups, R3, R4 = H or aliphatic hydrocarbon groups, R5 = lower alkyl group, R6 = alkyl or alkoxy group) are prepared by reacting: R1R2C-C(OH)-CR3 = CH2 with (CO2R5)2CHCR4=CHCOR6 at 50 to 350 degrees C. The products are used as perfumes, intermediates for vitamins A and E, and as plant protecting agents.
