An animal-marking device employing a set of longitudinally-reciprocable tattooing needles is characterized in that the needles are of different lengths and their points lie on a straight line forming an acute angle with the direction of reciprocation. In Fig. 2 the needles are set in a hollow head 1 supplied with marking fluid through a flexible tube 4a. The fluid passes into a porous deformable mass 7 surrounding the needles 2 and contained within a tube 6 which is stationary and has a chamfered end 6a corresponding to the line of needlepoints. In a modification (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) the mass 7 is omitted and the fluid passes through the needles, which are hollow. The head and needles are reciprocated by a rod 5 attached to an oscillating arm 11. Springs 12, 13 encircle the arm where it passes through a fixed body 8, threaded end-stops 9, 10 being adjustable to vary the stroke.
