<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic key system which improves security by inhibiting fraudulent communication from being established between an electronic key and a vehicle by using a relay machine. <P>SOLUTION: Counter signals Ske and Sca are transmitted in a direction opposite to the transmission direction of a request signal (challenge signal Scc1) or a response signal (response signal Sre1) in overlapping timing during the transmission of the request signal (challenge signal Scc1) or the response signal (response signal Sre1), between the vehicle 2 and the electronic key 10. Thus, the fraudulent communication is inhibited from being carried out between the vehicle 2 and the electronic key 10 in a position far away from the vehicle 2 by using the relay machine.
