Using the acquisition configuration of a mammography unit and an x-ray source model, the spectrum incident upon the breast is known. Using the pixel intensity of the mammographic image and the detector model, the energy exiting the breast is known. The contribution of scattered radiation is calculated and subtracted from the acquired image. The thickness of reference material that is required to match the attenuation of the breast is therefore ascertained by numerically solving for the thickness which when traversed by the incident beam, and subsequently recorded by the image receptor results in the primary component of the pixel intensity observed in the mammographic image.
