The device has a process connection (PZA) at which two probes types e.g. coaxial probe (K) and rod probe (S), are attached. A detection device (24) detects the type of probe based on characteristic features of a signal sequence that is measured at the process connection and contains information about the probe type. The detection device selects an evaluation algorithm appropriate for the detected probe type, where the detected probe type is displayed or reported to a superordinate controller. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting type of probe.
