The cooling system (18) has a radiator (22,24) that is impinged with traveling air over a cooling air opening (32). An exhauster (26) is arranged behind the radiator. A flap device (42) is provided in a flow path (40) for traveling air, particularly for scavenging air. The flap device is adjusted in dependence of the operation of the exhauster. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling an engine of a motor vehicle.
