A method of identifying larval brood carrying bivalve molluscs is disclosed. The method comprises the steps of: (a) placing one or more bivalve molluscs in contact with a fluid, (b) allowing the or each bivalve mollusc to open sufficiently to enable a device to be (c) placed partially within the opening created and subsequently placing the device (d) partially within the opening of the or at least selected molluscs to maintain or increase the degree of the opening of the mollusc, (e) analysing the or each selected mollusc for the presence of a larval brood, and (f) removing the device.
