PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electron emitting element capable of improving the amount of electron emission.

SOLUTION: The electron emitting element 1 includes an electron accelerating layer 4 between an electrode substrate 2 and a thin film electrode 3. The electron accelerating layer 4 includes a particulate layer 5 and a protective layer 6 in the order from the electrode substrate 2 side. The particulate layer 5 contains insulator particulates 7, and conductive particulates 8 having the average particle diameter which is smaller than that of the insulator particulates 7, and the protective layer 6 contains an electron transportation agent 9 and a binder component 10.
