PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lathe equipped with an automatic tool changer capable of changing a tool of a tool magazine with comparatively large accommodating number of tools in a short time without enlarging the installation space of the lathe. SOLUTION: The tool magazine is supported by a portal frame whose lower ends of columns on both sides are fixed to a bed of the lathe in a cantilever state or a hanging state through support arms or support frames. In a two-spindle opposed lathe, two tool magazines with a same construction and of a symmetric shape are arranged so that each of them is positioned in a space above each of two headstocks. A tool rest on which the tool automatically changed is mounted is arranged between the two tool magazines and at generally same height with that of the two tool magazines.
