PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an easy-to-handle counter circuit as digital logic circuitry, wherein the mounting area of the circuit is reduced, and also to provide a counting method. SOLUTION: The counter circuit alternately connects: a plurality of flip-flop circuits; and a plurality of switch circuits which select any one of an input signal, a low signal, and a high signal, and output the selected signal. In the case of a period when the number of pulses of a first pulse train and a second pulse train are counted, the switch circuits are controlled to output the input signal. When switching from the first pulse to the second pulse, the switch circuits are controlled to output the high signal after outputting the low signal, and the current count value is converted into a complement of "1". When entering a period to count the second pulse train, the number of pulses of the second pulse train are counted by inputting one pulse to the counter circuit and converting the counter value into a complement of "2".
