The invention relates to a method for measuring a contour (6) of the ground by means of a transmitting arrangement (20) for the directed emission of sound signals and by means of a receiving arrangement (28) comprising at least two transducers for receiving (5) the sound signals reflected from the contour (6) of the ground. To achieve this, sound signals are emitted (40) consecutively using a plurality of N soundings from predetermined positions P 1 , P 2, P 3, P 4,...., P N having different aspect angles N in relation to and distances rN from the contour (6) of the ground. A phase difference (44), the path differences (46) resulting therefrom, the corresponding angles of incidence (48), and the coordinates of incidence (50) are ascertained from the receive signals (70; 72) of the transducers for a plurality of sampling times and for the N soundings. Afterwards, a data density is ascertained (56) within a predefined range containing the coordinate of incidence. The range which has the maximum data density is selected (58), and the coordinate of incidence (x, y, z) corresponding to said range is used for ascertaining the contour (6) of the ground (60). The invention further relates to a device for carrying out such a method.
