PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized and lightweight tape printer by being equipped with a movable blade returning mechanism enabling a movable blade to be automatically returned after the actuation of a cutting mechanism. SOLUTION: The tape printer includes: a printing mechanism 61 for executing printing to a tape member 31; a carrying mechanism 62 operated by a carrying motor 46; a cutting mechanism 63 for cutting the tape member 31 by manually moving a movable blade 72 towards a fixed blade 71; a movable blade cutting position detecting switch for detecting that the movable blade 72 is located in its cutting position; a movable blade returning mechanism 64 for returning the movable blade 72 moved to its cutting position together with a cutting operating part 5 to its initial position; and a controlling means for reversely driving the carrying motor 46 when the movable blade cutting position detecting switch is turned on, and has a power transmitting mechanism 65, which transmits power to the cutting mechanism 63 at the normally rotationally driving of the carrying motor 46 and transmits power to the movable blade returning mechanism 64 at the reversely rotationally driving of the carrying motor 46.
