The circulation of hot gases in a soaking pit having a burner 1 in one wall above a waste gas outlet 4, is improved by placing a high velocity burner 5 low down in the opposite wall. The burner 5, which may be of low output, is directed downwardly, and may be mounted above a step 6 or in a recess in the wall. The burners are arranged to fire between the rows of ingots in the soaking pit.
