[Also in Division H1] An anisotropic planar thin magnetic film 15, Fig. 3, is provided with polepieces 50, 51 in the form of spaced isotropic magnetic layers located either in contact with or adjacent to the film and beneath a control conductor 20 extending parallel to the easy magnetization axis of the film, the polepieces being positioned symmetrically with respect to a control/read conductor 30 located orthogonally of conductor 20. The polepieces may be either located in the surface of the film adjacent the conductors, as shown, or on the opposite surface, and serve to limit the domain boundaries CA, CB so as to minimize spurious coupling with adjacent storage locations and to reduce self demagnetization. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 5 (not shown), additional polepieces are provided along the hard axis of magnetization and are symmetrically disposed with respect to conductor 20. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), the polepieces are provided at the extremities of a thin magnetic film of cruciform shape. These differences from the basic arrangement are shown in Fig. 7 in which an additional modification is the division and shaping of the polepieces 50-53 so as to reduce the control circuit inductance. The device may be formed by deposition processes. |
