The method involves measuring the running time (L1,L2) of the electromagnetic waves between the remote control unit and the driver assistance system (FAS). The distance between the remote control unit and the driver assistance system is determined from the running time measurement. The activation of a driver assistance function of the driver assistance system takes place by the remote control unit only when the distance of the remote control unit and the driver assistance system is less than or equal to a pre-determined maximum operating distance. An independent claim is also included for a driver assistance system with a transceiver for executing the method.
