The method involves a step of measuring the inhibitory activity of a candidate substance on a sphingomyelin synthase, wherein the candidate substance is determined to have at least one function selected from the group consisting of an anti-obesity agent, a visceral fat-reducing agent, a fatty liver-treating agent and an adiponectin expression enhancer when the candidate substance has an inhibitory activity on the sphingomyelin synthase.
