ACTIVATING CARBON MATERIAL USING AN ARC TO HEAT TO A SPECIFIC TEMPERATURE

Disclosed is a method for producing an activated carbon material. The method includes: within a reaction chamber (1) causing relative movement between a carbon-containing substrate (8) and an electric arc in a gap between two electrodes (2, 3) or adjacent an electrode. The movement is done so that an electric arc exists between the electrode and the substrate to heat the substrate to a substrate surface temperature, the temperature effective to activate the carbon-containing substrate and above about 3750K.
