<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sintered compact having low thermal conductivity and suitably usable for a probe of friction stir welding, and also to provide a rotary tool for the friction stir welding using the sintered compact. <P>SOLUTION: The rotary tool 1 is used for the probe 12 of the friction stir welding. The tool 1 is formed of the sintered compact containing 50-80 vol% of a first phase and the balance being a second phase and unavoidable impurities. The first phase is formed of WC. The second phase is partially stabilized zirconia containing at least one selected from Y<SB>2</SB>O<SB>3</SB>, CeO<SB>2</SB>, and MgO as a stabilizer.
