PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video-audio playback apparatus capable of reducing power consumption, by determining viewer's degree of attention in accordance with the level of sound volume and performing video decoding and backlight control for a liquid crystal panel, when the viewer's degree of attention is determined to be low. SOLUTION: The video-audio playback apparatus includes a compressed-audio-data decoding portion 16b, configured to decode compressed video data and compressed audio data of a program to thereby generate audio data; an audio data processing portion 18a, configured to compare a sound volume of the audio data for an arbitrary period with a threshold; and a compressed-video-data decoding portion 16a, configured to perform first decoding processing corresponding to the compressed video data on compressed video data, in which the sound volume of the audio data for the arbitrary period is synchronized with the audio data that is equal to or lower than the threshold among pieces of the audio data.
