A projection display device that displays an image by projecting the image onto a transmissive screen from the rear thereof includes: an illumination optical system for guiding a light beam emitted from a laser light source to the transmissive screen; a projection optical system for enlarging an image formed on a region to be illuminated of an image display element, and projecting the enlarged image on the transmissive screen, the projection optical system being configured such that the product of the F-number and the projection magnification of the projection optical system is less than 400; wherein the transmissive screen includes a Fresnel lens and a lenticular lens respectively equipped with a light diffusion layer for diffusing incident light and causing resultant light to exit the light diffusion layer. The light diffusion layer of the lenticular lens has a thickness of less than 300μm.
