The sensor (1) has an optical transparent body (10) e.g. sapphire glass plate, and a transparent body side (16) at which beam of light irradiated from a light source (4) is reflected. A soot layer is attached at the side. A light detector (6) is arranged at another side (18) of the transparent body, where the latter side is formed opposite to the former side. The light detector detects the light that is scattered from the soot layer. The light source is formed as a laser, and includes ring-shaped heating element at the former side of the transparent body. The body is made of sapphire crystal. An independent claim is also included for a soot particle collection method.
