A cell has two electrodes counter to each other through a predetermined gap and is filled with the active material-liquid crystal mixture. A sweep voltage component Vo changed at a sweep speed R (V/s), and a signal voltage superimposed on the sweep voltage component and combined with an AC component having a frequency f and a peak-peak amplitude Vp-p are applied between two counter electrodes in the cell.
