[Also in Divisions C2 and C5] A catalyst, prepared by admixing at least one solid transition metal phthalocyanine with a carrier, preferably having a specific surface area of between 50 and 500m<SP>2</SP>/g, and an alkali metal oxide or hydroxide, the amount of transition metal phthalocyanine being between 0.05% and 50% by weight with respect to the carrier and the amount of alkali metal oxide or hydroxide being between 10% and 50% by weight with respect to the catalytic mass, is used to oxidise mercaptans to disulphides. The catalyst may further contain from 5 to 25% by weight of water, and a binding agent such as graphite, bentonite, calcium oxide and magnesia, or activating agent such as Hg, Mn and Cu compounds. Suitable carriers include coal, alumina and silica. Examples describe the preparation of catalysts comprising cobalt or copper phthalocyanines supported on coal and impregnated with sodium or potassium hydroxide. |
