PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce a flicker when pixels are turned on or turned off for a plurality of subfields, respectively. SOLUTION: A frame is composed of three groups, and each group is composed of six subfields, and pixels are turned on or turned off according to a driving pattern which conforms to a gradation level. As the driving pattern, there are; a type A of basic pattern which includes a bit arrangement which instructs a liquid crystal element to turn on or turn off for one gradation level for each subfield; and types B, C of shift pattern which shift the phase of the bit arrangement with respect to the type A in units 'six' which means the number of the subfields. One of the patterns is selected to one pixel according to the position of the pixel concerned, and then the one pixel concerned is turned on or turned off. The pixel is driven with polarity designated by a signal Frp, and the period of the signal Frp is made to be equal to or below the frame, and half of the period of the signal Frp is made to correspond to the periods of the six subfields.
