The present invention discloses a method and system for media modification, which is used for solving the problem in the prior art that it is not considered during media modification that whether user acknowledgement or media-modification precondition is needed, resulting in technical defects like possible bearer resource embezzlement, bringing redundancy and so on. The present invention regards the Re-INIVITE 200 OK message as the confirmed time point for the media addition and/or modification; in the condition that there are preconditions but no need of user acknowledgement, the precondition-satisfied time point is regarded as the confirmed time point for the media component addition and/or the existing media component modification; in the condition that there are preconditions with need of user acknowledgement, the 200 OK response message to the Re-INVITE message is regarded as the confirmed time point for the media component addition and/or the existing media component modification. By the present invention, a premature acknowledgement to the modification, before the resource is available or before the user acknowledgement, is avoided, and thus the bearer resource embezzlement and bringing unnecessary redundant steps are prevented.
