<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for simply producing a retardation layer that includes a plurality of regions different in in-plane retardation and thickness direction retardation and that is excellent in flatness and heat resistance. <P>SOLUTION: The method for producing a retardation substrate includes the steps of: applying a solution including a photopolymerizable bar-like liquid crystal compound exhibiting thermotropic liquid crystal properties with uniform film thickness on a substrate, the bar-like liquid crystals being aligned in homogeneous alignment or cholesteric alignment to form a liquid crystal material layer; performing light irradiation with a different dose according to the region, to form a region with a different content of a crosslinked component of the bar-like liquid crystal in the liquid crystal material layer; and exposes the whole substrate.
