PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aquaporin gene expression promoter that promotes aquaporin gene expression of a cell and to provide a medicine that increases aquaporin gene products by the aquaporin gene expression promoter thereby supplementing normal functions of a water channel to ameliorate symptoms associated with hypofunction of aquaporin. SOLUTION: The aquaporin gene expression promoter comprises as an effective ingredient phosphatidic acid represented by formula (1): X-CH<SB>2</SB>-OR (wherein R is an 8-22C alkyl group or an 8-22C acyl group; and X is a cyclic phosphatidic acid, lysophosphatidic acid, an alkali metal salt thereof, or a salt thereof comprising a substituted ammonium group or an unsubstituted ammonium group).
