Apparatus for reducing volatile metallic chlorides to produce the metal, comprises an outer cylinder (12) Fig.1 heated in a furnace (28) and provided with a top and a removable bottom plate (14), an intermediate cylinder (16) for receiving the metallic reducing agent and reaction by-products and an inner cylinder (22) with a perforated carrier screen (24) at the bottom thereof, for retaining the reaction products against gravity and a cover (26) at the top through which a pipe (30) feeds the volatile chlorides. The intermediate cylinder is preferably vertically reciprocable and has a valve (18) for discharging by-products from the system. In other embodiments the reaction system (inner and intermediate cylinders may be moved from a reaction station, to a cooling and unloading station and then to a reactant loading station so that semi-continuous operation can be achieved. The reduction of the volatile chlorides of Ti, Zr, Hf, Nb and Ta with a metal such as Mg or Na, is referred to.
