The method involved connecting a field bus interface (FBS) with a field bus (FB), where field devices (F1-F3) e.g. temperature measuring device, exchange data with a control unit (S) in the form of telegram via the field bus. The telegram is transmitted on basis of a protocol, where the protocol comprises a protocol parameter that is selected from one of baud rate and field bus address. The data exchange is intercepted. The protocol parameter is determined from the intercepted data exchange. The field bus interface is set on the basis of the determined protocol parameter.
