Cells from micro-organisms are treated with an acid, which may be mineral or carboxylic, and the resultant suspension is then heated, preferably to 90-98‹C. for less than 1 hour, whereby only the cell walls are destroyed, the cell contents remaining substantially unaffected and being utilisable as fodder. The suspension may subsequently be neutralised and dried or the pH of the heated suspension may be adjusted to 3-5 and precipitated proteins and insoluble materials separated. Specified acids are hydrochloric, sulphuric, nitric, citric, acetic, oxalic, and succinic. Preferred micro-organisms are Corynebacterium glutamicum (Micrococcus glutamicus ATCC 13032) and Torulopsis famata (ATCC 15586). |
