Acrylonitrile polymers and copolymer textile material is dyed in level shades with cationic dyes by heating the dyebath liquor to a dyeing temperature T and at a definite liquor exhaustion rate, the temperature T being found from the equation T=100-a(log tgα(100‹C)-log b-log(X)+2) #- (-) #log 2 (#tx)T. in which a is the change in temperature which halves or doubles tgα(100‹C), b is the depth of colour (in mg of commercial dye per g of fibrous material) to be achieved, X is the liquor exhaustion in %, tx denotes the dyeing time in seconds which corresponds to the liquor exhaustion X, (X) is the liquor exhaustion rate #(-) (#tx)T at the temperature T and tgα(100‹C.) is C F where C F #t is the concentration of commercial dye in the fibre in mg per g which is present in the fibre after time t at a dyeing temperature of 100‹C. When the value of tgα(100‹C.) of a dye for a specific fibre is not known the fibre is dyed at an arbitrarily chosen temperature Tw and temperate T is determined from the equation T=Tw+a (log (X)-log (X) ) where log 2 (#x)T (#tx)TW (X) is the liquor exhaustion rate at the (-) (#tx)TW temperature Tw. When the value of (a) of a fiber is not known dyeing is effected at two arbitrarily chosen temperatures Twl and Tw2 and (a) is obtained from in which (X) and (X) are the exhaus- (-) (-) (#tx)TW1 (tx)TW2 tion rates to be measured at a arbitrarily chosen temperatures Tw1 and Tw2.
