PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the time from start of a distance measuring operation to focusing in an imaging device having a focus detection device which detects a focus accurately using a plurality of pixel rows for focus detection. SOLUTION: The imaging device first reads out either pixel data of the upper pixel row or pixel data of the lower pixel row, performs distance measuring operations and lens driving while reading the pixel data of the other row, and determines the final focusing position by the distance measuring operations using all the pixel data as soon as reading of all the pixel data is completed.
