1,205,861. Tyre tread reinforcement. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. 4 June, 1968 [27 July, 1967], No. 26596/68. Heading B7C. A tread reinforcement for a radial ply tyre comprises a parallel-sided strip 1 which is wrapped around the tyre carcass in the cylindrical condition prior to expansion, this strip comprising a plurality of spaced parallel cords 2 embedded in elastomeric material 4 and inclined at an angle to the mid-circumferential plane of the tyre, the thickness 6 of the elastomeric binding between the cords being substantially less than the cord diameter. In making the radial ply tyre, carcass plies are wrapped around an expandable drum, bead rings are positioned, the tread reinforcement described above, whose cords make an angle of between 40 and 65 degrees with the tyre's midcircumferential plane, is placed over the carcass plies, tread and sidewall stock layers are added, and finally the whole is expanded to a toroidal shape causing the cord angle of the belt to be reduced to less than 20 degrees. The cords may be fibreglass, rayon, nylon, polyester or wire. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,105,752. |
