A hydrocarbon feedstock containing two or more C atoms per molecule is made into a methane-rich gas by reforming with steam over a nickel-containing catalyst in two stages, the temperature of the first stage being in the range 800‹ to 1000‹ F. and in the second stage in the range 600‹ to 750‹ F. The Ni catalyst is promoted with a barium salt of an organic acid, e.g. barium acetate, and is on a support of calcium aluminate.
