In a multi-contact connector individual contacts of both the plug part and socket parts are firmly held in the part yet readily removable. Each contact 12 is formed with a rack portion 16 and is held in a bore 22 in a dielectric body 20 by a radially expandible sleeve 24, which may be integral with the body 20 and split longitudinally for added resilience, engaging the neck portion 16, shoulders 14 and 18 resisting axial movement. The contact 12 may be removed by applying a large axial force to expand the resilient sleeve 24 over the shoulder 18. Locking member 28 has one end of the bore 30, which receives the contact 12, widened to extend around the sleeve 24 to stop radial expansion of the sleeve and thus prevent axial removal of the contact 12. The dielectric body 20 and locking member 28 are held in engaged position by co-operating threaded rings 38 and 40 which have shoulders 37 and 41 which force the two members 20 and 28 together. A soft rubber sealing gasket 32 is located between the body 20 and locking member 28. In an alternative embodiment the main body and locking member are urged together by a centrally located screw. Guide pins 52 may be provided to ensure correct polarity of the contacts and locking member. External connections to the contacts 12 pass through the soft sealing grommet 34. The plug and socket parts of the connector are joined by bayonet coupling 54 with 0-ring 58 and gasket 56 ensuring watertight seal between the two parts. |
