A cooling tower 10, Fig. 1, comprises a lower portion 12 housing liquid receiving packing sections 13, each having an inlet and outlet side 13a, 13b, Fig. 2, separated from each other in a direction generally along the tower plan periphery so that air entering the spaces 14a flows through the sections 13 with a substantial component 15a parallel to the direction of the tower periphery and is then received in spaces 14b for subsequent passage to the tower interior. Partitions 16 extend diagonally between the outer extents 17 or the outlet sides 13b to the inner extents 18 of the inlet sides 13a to direct this flow direction and further partitions 19, 20 cover the inner- and outer-most extents of the sections. The sections are shown as circularly arranged about the vertical central axis of the tower and elongated towards the tower interior. Water to be cooled flows through the sections from a water basin 60 overlying the sections and spaces 14a, 14b therebetween via groups of apertures 67 only above the sections and the basin extends outwardly over the air entrances to spaces 14a to provide a water curtain via apertures 70. An openable and closable auxiliary air inlet structure 73 extends between the basin and stack 11. In modifications, the sections may be spaced apart linearly, Fig. 5, as in a rectangular tower construction in which air flow direction may be as shown in Fig. 2, of the partitions may extend between pairs of sections at their inner and outer sides respectively, Fig. 6, so that alternate spaces between the sections are outwardly covered and inwardly exposed to the tower interior. In a further modification, Fig. 7, the sections are arranged in a row and are elongated in staggered formation.
