[Also in Division C7] A coating composition for electrophoretic deposition comprises an aqueous medium and a resinous binder which is a modified glycol prepared by reacting a polybutadiene glycol, containing at least 70% by weight of butadiene and having a hydroxyl group at each end of the polymer main chain, with an acid anhydride to produce a half ester of the polybutadiene glycol and neutralizing the half ester with a base to render it water-soluble or water-emulsifiable. The composition may be pigmented and/or diluted prior to being used in the electrodeposition process. Examples are given in which (1) polybutadiene glycol is reacted with maleic anhydride and neutralized in an aqueous medium containing diethanolamine and butoxyethanol, (2) polybutadiene glycol is reacted with phthalic anhydride and neutralized in an aqueous medium containing ammonia and butoxyethanol, (3) polybutadiene glycol is reacted with trimellitic acid anhydride and neutralized as in (1) and (4) butadiene-styrene copolymer glycol is reacted with phthalic anhydride and neutralized in an aqueous medium containing triethylamine and butoxyethanol. Titanium dioxide and carbon black are added to the resulting compositions.
